Whole Grains
Whole grains are unprocessed, whole, living cereals.
Whole grains like brown rice, sweet rice, wheat berries, barley, millet, rye, and oats are made up of three parts: the endosperm, the bran and the germ.
Refined grains contain only the endosperm, but it is in the bran that dietary fibre, iron, B vitamins, and phytochemicals are abundant. Whole grains are also rich in antioxidants and protein.
Whole grains help to slow down the digestion of starch in the body, reducing blood sugar highs and lows and maintaining healthy weight.
A diet rich in whole grains can lower cholesterol levels and promote healthy intestinal micro-flora.
Whole grains can also reduce the risk of some diseases, including heart disease, certain types of cancer and Type 2 diabetes.
